The Sunnah Way to Drink Water

Water is one of the greatest blessings from Allah ﷻ, essential for both physical health and spiritual well-being. The Qur’an emphasizes the importance of water as a life-giving source: "And We made from water every living thing." (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:30). Our bodies are composed largely of water, and maintaining proper hydration is crucial for our overall health.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) not only emphasized the importance of drinking water but also taught us the best way to consume it for maximum benefits. Following the Sunnah of hydration can help improve digestion, prevent fatigue, and promote overall health.

Begin with Bismillah and Drink with the Right Hand

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us to begin every action with the name of Allah.

"When one of you drinks, let him not breathe into the vessel, and let him drink with his right hand." (Sahih Muslim).

Drinking water while seated is recommended for better digestion and following the Sunnah. Sitting while drinking ensures the body processes water smoothly and helps avoid digestive discomfort.

"None of you should drink while standing. If anyone forgets, he should vomit it out." (Sahih Muslim)

Drink Water in Three Sips

Drink in three breaths rather than gulping it all at once. This practice prevents choking, aids digestion, and allows the body to absorb water more effectively. This increases mindfulness and gratitude for the blessing of water.

"Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but drink in two or three sips." (Tirmidhi)

Avoid Breathing into the Vessel

The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed not to blow or exhale into the drinking container.

"Do not breathe into your drinking vessel." (Sunan Ibn Majah).

It prevents contamination of the water with germs. It helps maintain the purity and cleanliness of the drink. Supports better hydration without taking in excess air.

Extremely Cold Water

Drinking very cold water can shock the body and disturb digestion. Lukewarm or room-temperature water is best, especially during and after meals.

Keep the water container closed

It is recommended to keep water covered, especially overnight.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Cover the vessels and tie the water skins, for there is a night in the year when a disease descends, and it does not pass over an uncovered vessel or an untied water skin without some of that disease descending into it."
— (Sahih Muslim 2014)

Best Times to Drink Water According to Sunnah

Timing matters when it comes to hydration. Islam encourages drinking water at the right moments for better health.

On Waking Up – Helps activate metabolism and cleanse the body.

Before and After Meals – Aids digestion but should be in moderation.

Before Sleeping – Keeps the body hydrated during the night.

During Suhoor and Iftar – Prevent dehydration while fasting.

Proper hydration improves energy levels, digestion, and mental clarity. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and impaired concentration. Drinking sufficient water daily ensures the body functions optimally.

By adopting the Sunnah way of drinking water, we gain both health benefits and spiritual rewards. Every sip taken with mindfulness and gratitude brings us closer to the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.
